The Apple A12 Bionic led the industry to 7 nanometers in September 2018, powering the [[iPhone XS]] generation and the record-selling [[iPhone XR]]. Its Neural Engine leapt from two cores to eight — 600 billion to five trillion operations per second in one year — the surge behind Smart HDR and the pivot to computational photography.

The A12 generation defined the modern spec floor: it carried seven years of iOS releases (through iOS 18), its A12X/A12Z iPad Pro variants previewed the Mac-class ambitions realized in M1, and its process lead began the TSMC-node-first pattern Apple has held since.
