The Apple A11 Bionic, introduced in September 2017 across the [[iPhone 8]] generation and [[iPhone X]], is the chip where Apple's silicon independence went total: the first Apple-designed GPU (after dropping Imagination Technologies), the first Neural Engine, and six CPU cores all usable at once. The Neural Engine existed to run Face ID and Animoji; it turned out to be the most consequential block Apple ever added.

= Legacy =

The Neural Engine begat the on-device machine-learning era — computational photography, then [[Apple Intelligence]] — and "Bionic" branding stuck for seven generations. The A11's all-in-house design completed the vertical integration the A4 had started.
