tvOS is Apple's operating system for the Apple TV set-top boxes, launched on October 30, 2015, with the fourth-generation Apple TV under the thesis "the future of TV is apps" — an App Store, native games, and Siri search replacing the fixed-channel software of earlier boxes. Derived from iOS on the shared Darwin core, its interface is built for the couch: a focus-driven grid navigated by remote, voice, or game controller from ten feet away.
Its version numbering began at 9 (aligned with its iOS 9 sibling) and has tracked iOS ever since, including the jump from 18 to 26. The same foundation runs the HomePod line as audioOS, making tvOS the trunk of Apple's home platforms; the Apple TV also serves as a hub for HomeKit and Matter smart homes.

tvOS 9 founded the app platform; tvOS 10–12 added dark mode, 4K HDR, and Dolby Atmos; tvOS 13 brought multi-user profiles, Apple Arcade, and console controllers; tvOS 14–16 wired in the smart home (camera feeds, Matter) and spatial audio; tvOS 17 made the TV a FaceTime device via the iPhone's camera; tvOS 18 added InSight content identification; and tvOS 26 carried Liquid Glass and karaoke into the current generation, with tvOS 27 in beta.
