The iPad Air is the iPad lineup's sweet spot — most of the iPad Pro's capability at a mid price, in the modern all-screen design. The current eighth-generation models (March 2026) run the Apple M4 in 11- and 13-inch sizes and are the first iPads carrying Apple's own radios: the C1X modem and N1 networking chip.
1 History✎
The 2013 original wore the "Air" name for its thinness, then the line went dormant as the Pro arrived. Its 2019 revival built the modern role: the 2020 redesign brought the all-screen look, Touch ID in the power button, and colors; the M1 (2022) and M2 (2024) generations added Mac silicon and the first 13-inch Air; the M3 followed in 2025. The M4 refresh of March 2026 kept design and price steady while upgrading chip, memory, and wireless — the Air as the lineup's dependable middle.

3 Position✎
The Air is the iPad most people should buy and the one Apple aims them at: Pencil Pro and Magic Keyboard support, M-series performance, and a $400 gap to the OLED Pro that funds the whole argument. Its 2026 role as the C1X and N1's tablet debut also made it, quietly, the iPad line's radio pioneer.
