Sexy Technique (お色気の術, Oiroke no Jutsu), the Sexy Jutsu of the English-language anime,[1] is a comic ninjutsu in Naruto invented by Naruto Uzumaki.[2] The series carries it as a running joke from its first chapter to its final battles. Technically it is nothing but the Academy's Transformation Technique with one specific target shape: an attractive naked young woman, wrapped in just enough drifting smoke to stay printable. Its effect on a certain kind of dignified adult is treated as reliable weaponry.[2]

1 What it does

The technique adds nothing to the Transformation Technique's mechanics: the same hand sign, the same smoke, the same disguise that changes appearance and nothing else. What makes it Naruto's own is the target and the intent. He does not use it to sneak past guards; he uses it to knock over serious adults, and in this series that works with remarkable consistency. Iruka Umino takes it in the face in the opening pages of chapter 1 and goes down with a nosebleed, shouting at Naruto to stop inventing stupid techniques.[2]

There is a second joke underneath the first one. Naruto built this technique on his own, unasked, while failing the skills he was actually supposed to learn. The worst student in the class turns out to be creative, stubborn, and willing to practice something for hours, and those three qualities end up mattering a great deal more than his grades.

2 In the story

The technique debuts as Naruto's answer to a punishment. Made to retake the transformation test after painting the Hokage Monument, he ignores the assignment entirely and performs the Sexy Technique instead, to the delight of the class and the fury of his instructor.[2] It is the first technique the reader ever sees him perform successfully, a few pages before the Clone Technique defeats him in the graduation exam.

It returns almost immediately as a lesson. In chapter 2 the Third Hokage's grandson Konohamaru Sarutobi demands to be taught Naruto's best technique. The official summary of the matching anime episode states plainly what he gets: the Sexy Jutsu, to the dismay of his tutor Ebisu.[1][4] From there the joke never leaves the series. Combining it with the Shadow Clone Technique produces the group version usually called the Harem Technique, which Naruto saves for enemies who have just finished explaining their own dignity. A male version of the joke even surfaces in the last battles of the manga, buying one decisive opening against the final enemy of the series.[5]

3 Reading it now

New readers today often find the Sexy Technique uncomfortable, and two things help. It is a deliberately childish joke from a comic written for young teenagers in 1999, and the target is always the ridiculous adult, never the story itself. The series treats it as Naruto's personal trademark rather than a serious fighting skill, and it is passed on to the next generation in the sequel manga.
